Drifter

Carved and sandblasted sugar maple / 14' long x 1' diameter at top, tapering to a point (5' above ground, 9' below) / 2014

Carved from a single piece of sugar maple and installed at a diagonal, Drifter is a long, tapering cylinder that exists more below ground than above. Acting in part as a physical bridge between the realms of the living and the dead within the cemetery, its top is installed at a level to be touched while the end of it makes its way between several graves. Having been sandblasted, the open-celled and unsealed wood functions like a sponge, absorbing all matter around it.
