Floating Reflection

plexiglas mirror, aluminum, foam
8' x 8' x 8'
2002

While living for the summer on a lake in Maine as an artist-in-residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, I wanted to create a piece that would be able to change as dramatically as the appearance of the lake itself. Engineered as a floatable frame that could tilt to reflect the sky, the structure held an 8' x 8' mirror with a 4' square cut out of the center. Throughout the course of a day and through the changing weather patterns, the piece was designed to mimic the appearance of the sky in the lake. In turn, the reflected sky framed a portion of the shore and the water, collapsing both the land and sky into a floating, two-dimensional image.
