Empty Signs

Empty Signs drew its inspiration from the aesthetic of mid-century roadside signage. Without any advertising content, the sign’s colors and shapes elicit a purely formal experience. Initially commissioned as a temporary artwork for Troy Glow light art festival, it has since become a permanent addition to Troy, NY. Running through the piece is a nine-minute light score accompanied by a distinct sound effect added to each sign. The effect for each of them begins independently, yet over time all of the signs fall into synchronicity with one another. At its peak they operate as one unit, their sounds harmonizing together. Eventually their collaboration falls apart with each sign returning to its original, independent state.
