Mountains Make Good Valleys

Laser-cut plate aluminum, powder-coated paint, steel rod, concrete / 9’ x 27’ / 2017

As an outdoor sculpture that is to be viewed through a lobby window, Mountains Make Good Valleys functions less like an object and more as an image. Relatedly, certain Japanese gardens are only meant to be viewed from a set location and never physically entered, asking the viewer to project themselves into the space. Aesthetically, this piece relates to Japanese woodblock prints. With their details simplified to a few colors along with the texture of the printing paper, the scale depicted has the ability to flip flop between vast and miniature.
