Inner Cloister

COB strip lights, steel, electronics / 15’ x 75’ x 75’ / 2023

Inner Cloister was a site-specific installation created for Durham Cathedral, the largest in England. Commissioned by Artichoke Trust, it replicated the shape and scale of the cloister’s stone arches in light. At 15’ tall and with a footprint of 75’ x 75’, it demarcated a separate and ethereal inner arcade that mirrored the scale of the physical one that surrounded it. An effect ran through the lights that emulated the appearance of walking. It acted as a reminder of the monks and nuns who would have moved through these corridors for nearly a thousand years. As a threshold, the artwork aimed to make visible a boundary between this realm and another.
