Extended Sunset

Extended Sunset was created for the street facing windows of the performing arts auditorium at Penn State University in State College, PA. The piece was based around a found photograph of a sunset taken on the (often overcast) campus years earlier. The image, divided between six 15’ tall windows, was backlit by lights that were controlled by an astronomical timer. At the exact moment that sunset began throughout the year, the lights in the windows would begin to illuminate. As actual sunset waned, Extended Sunset brightened in inverse proportion. It continued throughout each night, only to fade out again at sunrise.
