Walking Stones

Walking Stones is a luminary procession for an outdoor concert of Albany Symphony at the first lock on the Erie Canal. For it, a series of community members carried “stones” around the lock. Walking Stones borrows its imagery from the limestone blocks that were mined, carved, and moved by thousands of manual laborers over the eight years it took to construct the canal in the early 1800’s. This procession references the act of moving stones into configurations that would become the canal and lock system. To mirror the impossibility of building a 300+ mile canal with untrained labor using predominantly hand tools, I wanted to create an equally impossible object: a magical block of stone that is now featherlight and illuminated.
