Walking Stones

Walking Stones was a luminary procession for an outdoor concert of the Albany Symphony which took place at the entry point for the Erie Canal in Waterford, NY. The audience of 3,000 watched as 20 community members carried what appeared to be glowing blocks of stone around the canal lock. They referenced the limestone blocks that were mined, carved, and moved by thousands of manual laborers to construct the canal in the early 1800’s. To mirror the impossibility of building a 300+ mile canal using predominantly hand tools, this project aimed to create an equally impossible object: ethereal blocks of stone that are now illuminated and featherlight.
